Emotional literacy - a cultural miss?

Updated: Oct 26, 2023

Emotional literacy is the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and express emotions effectively, plays a pivotal role in a child's overall development and success in both the academic and social aspects of their education. Both schools and parents should consider how emotional literacy is taught and handled throughout school life and reinforced in home life. There are several benefits:

  • Emotional literacy equips children with the essential skills to navigate the complex social landscape of schools. It enables them to build positive relationships, resolve conflicts, and communicate their feelings and needs with peers and teachers. In an educational environment, where collaboration and teamwork are increasingly emphasized, emotional literacy becomes a cornerstone for fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere.

  • Emotional literacy is also closely linked to academic achievement. Research has consistently shown that children with high emotional intelligence tend to perform better in school. They are more attentive, resilient in the face of setbacks, and able to manage stress effectively. This not only enhances their learning experience but also contributes to improved outcomes and long-term success in their educational journey.

When parents consider different types of schools for their children, whether it be public schools, private schools, charter schools, or homeschooling, they should prioritize institutions that recognize the significance of emotional literacy. Schools that incorporate emotional intelligence into their curriculum and provide opportunities for emotional growth offer a holistic education that prepares children not only for academic success but also for a fulfilling and well-rounded life.

Emotional literacy is often overlooked when conversations of culture occur, this is one of the reasons we have authored the Skills for life Journal https://bit.ly/NSD-100days
