In brief…
Much consideration is given to students who require support within schools, we would contend however that the same consideration is not always given to parents when trying to engage them. When engaging with parents, Special Educational Needs (SEN) or Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs (SEMH), should be taken into account and schools should prioritize personalized communication and events. Tailoring communication methods to support individual needs, providing flexible scheduling, and creating quiet spaces during events are essential. Staff training in recognising unique needs, fostering peer support networks, and collaborating with external services enhance the school's commitment to inclusivity.

When organizing communications or events for parents with special educational needs (SEN) or mental health needs, schools need to be inclusive, empathetic, and accommodating. Here are some considerations:
Accessibility:
Ensure that the venue is accessible, considering physical disabilities and sensory impairments e.g. do not hold meetings in rooms adjacent to sports halls that are in use
Provide information in various formats, such as written materials, and audio recordings, and consider visual impairments such as colour blindness when creating written materials
Advance Notice and Flexibility:
Give parents ample notice for events to allow them to make necessary arrangements.
Be flexible with timings and format to accommodate potential challenges parents may face in attending events.
Individualized Approaches:
Recognize that each parent's needs are unique and provide support as necessary.
Establish open communication channels to understand specific requirements and needs. This data can be collected on registration, so the school has a better understanding of their parent body.
Quiet Spaces:
Create quiet spaces at events where parents can retreat if they need a break or a moment of privacy, especially for those with sensory sensitivities or mental health concerns.
Clear Communication:
Use clear and concise language in all communications, avoiding jargon and technical terms.
Provide information in advance to help parents prepare for discussions or presentations.
Supportive Staff:
Train staff to be aware of and sensitive to the diverse needs of parents and be more accommodating, e.g. some parents may require parents evening conversations in a different format
Designate staff members who can offer support and assistance during events.
Collaboration with Support Services:
Collaborate with local support services, community organizations, or mental health professionals to provide additional assistance if needed.
Build partnerships with external agencies that specialize in supporting individuals
Conclusion
Schools should prioritize inclusivity when communicating with and organizing events for parents with Special Educational Needs (SEN) or Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs (SEMH). Tailoring communication methods to accommodate individual preferences is crucial, whether through written materials, visual aids, or verbal communication. Flexibility in scheduling and alternative arrangements, such as virtual meetings, ensures accessibility for parents facing challenges. The creation of quiet and calming spaces at events acknowledges sensory sensitivities, promoting emotional well-being. Staff training in recognizing and addressing the unique needs of these parents fosters a supportive environment. Regular check-ins, peer support networks, and collaboration with external support services further enhance the school's commitment to meeting the diverse needs of parents with SEN or SEMH. By considering these factors, schools can cultivate a more empathetic and inclusive relationship with parents, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between home and school.
